Math Club YAMC Demonstrates Skill at Math League

On February 22, YISS’ high school math club, the YISS Advanced Mathematics Circle (YAMC) traveled to APIS to compete in the first Math League qualifying contest hosted in Korea. Up to this point, a total of 14 club members had been diligently preparing for the event, utilizing club meetings to gain familiarity with the novel question types offered by the contest and develop collaborative skills that were imperative for success in the team rounds. Needless to say, participants stepped into the contest space poised in their ability to demonstrate their aptitude in mathematics.

Starting in the early afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the contest ran for nearly four hours, ending just short of 5:00 p.m. During this time, participants were challenged through various rounds, including both independent and collaborative problem solving components. Although each new round inevitably came with its own set of obstacles, observing the overall team synergy of students encouraging and uplifting one another was certainly a highlight of the event.

In addition to a worthwhile experience, several individuals left the room having earned either a distinction or award, with YISS by and large performing exceptionally well, even placing third overall.

The following individuals have received a distinction for their outstanding performance in their respective grade level, enabling them to participate in the championship round in April:

Freshmen:
- Ryan P.
- Jun I.

Sophomores:
- Aiden K.
- Jayden K.

Seniors:
- Seungwoo L.

Moreover, the individuals listed below were able to receive an additional award for placing within the top 5 students in their respective grade level, creating a collective 10 individuals as qualifiers for the next round:

Freshmen:
- Ethan J., 1st place
- Kyle E., 2nd place
- Timothy S., 3rd place
- Ryan P., 4th place

Sophomores:
- Jay J., 2nd place

Last but not least, the YAMC would like to extend a special thanks to Ms. Miller, who acted as a sponsor, proctor and coach throughout the event. The experience created timeless memories for its participants, a truth that YAMC hopes to continue building on in the April championship later this month!
