Students Reflect on a Year of Seventh Grade Photography

As the school year draws to a close, seventh-grade photography students reflect on their journey through the lens of creativity. Guided by the inspiration of iconic artists such as Pete Eckert, Elliott Erwitt, Thomas Allen Harris, and Dorothea Lange, these young photographers have not only honed their technical skills but also delved into the deeper meanings behind their art.

Throughout the year, students have immersed themselves in various projects, each designed to challenge their creativity and expand their understanding of photography as a medium for storytelling. From mastering the intricacies of double exposure to capturing the essence of individuals through portraits, each assignment has pushed students to think critically about composition, lighting, and subject matter.

In studying the works of Eckert, Erwitt, Harris, and Lange, students have learned invaluable lessons about the power of storytelling through imagery. They have explored how photographs can evoke emotions, provoke thought, and shine a light on social issues. Through their own projects, students have discovered the importance of capturing moments that not only document but also resonate with viewers on a deeper level.

Embedded within the curriculum is the school's theme of "Created for Good," which serves as a guiding principle for students as they navigate their artistic journey. Through their photography, students have explored ways in which they can use their creativity for positive impact, whether by raising awareness about important causes, celebrating diversity, or simply spreading joy through their images.

At the heart of this class is the understanding that creating art is not just about technical skill, but also about expressing oneself authentically and connecting with others on a meaningful level. As students have delved deeper into their own creative processes, they have discovered that true artistry comes from the heart, reflecting the heart of our Creator. We draw close to God when we create, reflecting the nature of who he is in our own works of art.

As the year comes to an end, both students and teachers alike take pride in the growth and accomplishments achieved. From the hesitant beginners who first picked up a camera to the confident artists who now see the world through a different lens, the transformation is evident. This teacher, filled with pride, reflects on the journey of each student and the strides they have made, not just as photographers, but as storytellers and creators destined to make a positive impact on the world through their art.
