YISS Guardian Roundup: May 2023

YISS wants to recognize and celebrate the talent and hard work of our students who excel in activities and competitions that take place at a high level both inside and outside of school. In this edition of our Guardian Roundup, we are thrilled to highlight the following students and their recent accomplishments:

On March 18, seventh graders Aiden C., Ethan C., Noah C., Dillon K., and Ethan S. with sixth graders Ryan P. and Paul S. participated in the WithFutsal U15 Tournament at Adidas Football the Base in Yongsan. After preparing since 2022, their team placed 4th in the tournament.

In April, 10th grader Junu K. participated in the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Korea 2023 competition. Junu’s photo from a trip to Jeju Island showed the juxtaposition of the beauty of nature from afar and the reality of ocean pollution when taking a closer look. The deep meaning of the photo won him the YRE Award (15-18 years old).

On April 22, a team of YISS middle schoolers, made up of M.J. S., Olivia Jiahn S., and Aiden Y. competed in the Korea Junior National Debate Championships. Their team received second place in the 12 and Under (U-12) category out of 48 teams. Though this was their first championship, they plan on entering future competitions and participating in debate in high school.

On May 5, 8th grader Eva H. participated in the women's foil division of the Korean Amateur Fencing Competition, winning the gold medal after several rounds of selection. With this win under her belt, Eva now has eight gold medals from 2022-2023!

If you know of a student who has recently been recognized for excellence in a special activity or competition outside of school, you can nominate him/her for future roundups in the 2023-2024 school year using this form (yis.to/student-news).
