YISS Varsity Swim Makes Waves at KAIAC Championships

The YISS Varsity Swim Team delivered an outstanding performance at the KAIAC Swimming Championships held on January 17-18, earning 2nd place for the girls’ division and 3rd place for the boys’ division. With an overall team ranking of 3rd place, the squad showcased their commitment to this year’s team theme, “We Over Me,” by prioritizing teamwork, unity, and collective growth. The team not only pushed each other to new heights but also forged strong friendships along the way. Through hard work and dedication, the swimmers achieved numerous personal bests, making the season one to remember.

The girls’ team had a stellar season, surpassing last year’s points total by an impressive 131 points! Senior and Team captain Soul J. led the charge with a remarkable 2nd place finish in the 100m Freestyle, while Chloe P. powered through to secure 3rd place in the 100m Breaststroke. The consistent top-8 finishes from Serene H., Corrine C., Chloe P., and Caylee P. played a crucial role in propelling the girls to success. Complementing the team’s depth were strong performances by Daine L., Hannah C., Ashley P., Esther P., Lauren P., and Sian C. The synergy and determination of this group were evident throughout the meet.

Not to be outdone, the boys’ team smashed their previous season’s score, improving by 137 points! Senior and Team Captain Ben C. captured 2nd place in the 50m Butterfly and 3rd place in the 50m Breaststroke, while junior Max G. dominated the pool with 1st place finishes in the 100m IM, 100m Freestyle, and 400m Freestyle. Adding to the excitement, both Ben and Max shattered longstanding school records—Ben in the 50m Butterfly and Max in the 100m Individual Medley!

Key contributions came from upperclassmen Tommy K., Lucas In., Aiden L., and Phillip K., who stepped up to score crucial points. Meanwhile, the team’s future looks bright thanks to the impressive efforts of freshmen and sophomores Raymon M., Ryan C., Eugene L., Meiko W.L., and Joshua H., who played pivotal roles in individual and relay events. Rounding out the roster were Max N., Ryan H., Dylan H., Lucas C., Grant R., Aiden K., and Justin P., each contributing to the team’s collective success.

The team would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the parents for their unwavering support throughout the season. From cheering at meets to providing snacks and drinks to fuel the team their encouragement and dedication has been a cornerstone of the team’s success. A special thanks also goes to the YISS Athletics Department and Aquatics Department for their incredible support and commitment to the team.

The YISS Swim Team now sets its sights on the upcoming KASS Championships this May, where they’ll compete on their home turf. Go Guardians!
