Varsity Girls’ Volleyball Ends Season with Dramatic 5-Setter

This year was exciting for the varsity girls’ volleyball coaches due to the depth of talent and versatility of our players. The beginning of the season included a lot of positional work, determining the best line-up for our team. This proved difficult, in the best way, because of how well-rounded our roster was this season.

From the very beginning of the season, our varsity girls’ fought off fierce competition, beginning the season with an early loss to our rival school. Throughout the following weeks, our team grew in skill and confidence, but it wasn’t until our ACSC tournament trip that we fully realized our grit.

During the tournament, our Guardians played a total of 11 games across four days, pushing themselves to new levels of stamina. We also faced many different styles of play among the various teams from all over Asia, developing our ability to adjust and react quickly. Ultimately, YISS finished 3rd at ACSC, with junior Faith Kim taking home the best server award.

Directly after the ACSC tournament, we jumped into our last week of KAIAC conference play, facing two top teams. Poetically, the Guardians finished on top of our rivals in the last game of the season, putting us in 3rd place for the Blue Division with a 6-4 record.

At the KAIAC Cup tournament, the Guardians again faced their rivals in the fight for 3rd place. The game lasted five sets and came down to a grueling back-and-forth, finishing at 18-16 with the Guardians on top, sealing our 3rd place finish. At the tournament, senior Alex Sohn received the best server award, based on statistics throughout the tournament, and senior Jisoo Kim earned the best setter award, voted on by the coaches. The team also received the sportsmanship award for the tournament.

The final games of our season were perfect bookends to the first, proving the immense growth achieved by our whole team throughout the course of the season.

To close out the season at the Fall Sports Banquet, the following players received awards:

  • Spirit Award - Anna Fertig

  • Guardian Award - Jisoo Kim

  • Coach’s Award - Bex Cragun

  • MVP Award - Alex Sohn
