Ending the Year Strong: A Recap of Semester 2 StuCo Events
During our second semester of the 2023-24 school year, the HS Student Council organized a wide range of events, from our Valentine’s Day Candy Grams and March Spirit Week to reintroducing individual grade retreats for the first time since COVID-19. We also planned a lunch event for all students on the last day seniors attended school, along with the Senior Sunrise.
A common thread in all these events was our focus on student enjoyment rather than profit. Through efficient budgeting, we were able to fund grade trips for all classes: our senior trip took place on May 18-19, and our other grades took their class trips on June 3.
During our March Spirit Week, our themes were 2020 Throwback Day, College Merch Day, Color Day, Teacher-Student Swap Day, and Vacation/Airport Day. After voting, we awarded each winner a Gong Cha drink of their choice and a capybara keychain plush. It was so rewarding to see all of our students wear coordinated outfits to showcase school spirit!
During our last lunch on May 22, we watched our high school student body take photos in front of the photo zone we set up featuring portraits of the Class of 2024, delight in various ice cream flavors, and debate between chicken mayo and charcoal-grilled beef cup rice. We also featured a brief open mic, where students and staff expressed their appreciation or gave out words of advice.
Another memorable event was our Senior Sunrise on May 23, where the Class of 2024 gathered one last time on the field to watch the sunrise at 5:00 a.m. We played sentimental music, threw footballs, and played card games.
Our Senior Assembly featured diverse senior participation, from four different humorous and sentimental videos to a Kahoot featuring senior trivia, a live dance performance, and a singing performance. We felt we were able to truly send off our seniors in a way that encapsulated the care that staff had for us and the deep sense of community we shared.
All in all, we are grateful that the student body has been receptive to the events we planned all year. StuCo wrapped up its events with grade retreats destined for Caribbean Bay, Lotte World, and Nami Island for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, respectively, and with the “YISSlympics” or “Student of the Year” sports events on June 4.
We hope that next year, our new Student Council members can continue actively planning events, representing the student body, and acting as a bridge between the administration and students.
