Guest Speaker: Seth Smoker Discusses Career Exploration
Mr. Seth Smoker, senior manager and regional ethics and compliance officer at Carrier HVAC, chatted with Mr. Suhany's AP Economics class on May 16 to discuss his career path and offer advice to students on how to explore their own career options.
Mr. Smoker has a diverse career history, with experience in sales, law, and ethics. He graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2011 with a degree in international relations and economics. He then worked for Zimmer Orthopedics as a trauma specialist and sales associate. In 2018, he earned his Doctor of Law degree from Indiana University McKinney School of Law and worked as a staff attorney and eventual associate at a legal firm in Indianapolis. In January of 2022, he moved to his current position.
In his talk to the AP Economics students, Mr. Smoker discussed the importance of ethics and compliance in the business world. He explained that ethical behavior is not only the right thing to do, but it is also good for business. Ethical companies are more likely to be trusted by their customers, employees, and investors. They are also less likely to be fined or penalized by regulators.
Finally, Mr. Smoker also emphasized the importance of having a diverse set of skills and experiences. He said that his experiences in sales, law, and ethics have all helped him to be successful in his current role. He encouraged students to explore different fields and not be afraid to take risks.
Mr. Smoker's advice to students was to explore their interests, gain new skills and experiences, and not be afraid to take risks. This advice is sound for students who are unsure of their ultimate career path after university.
