YISS Celebrates Cultural Diversity at the International Bazaar

Yongsan International School of Seoul (YISS) celebrated its annual International Bazaar on Saturday, May 18, in a dazzling display of cultural richness and community spirit. Despite weather challenges that caused the event to be rescheduled, not once but twice, the International Bazaar unfolded into a resounding success, showcasing the vibrant tapestry of cultures within the YISS community.

The festivities kicked off with a colorful parade of nations, where students proudly bore flags representing over 50 nations, adorned in their traditional attire. It was a moving tribute to the diverse backgrounds that enrich the YISS community.

A major feature of the bazaar is undoubtedly its global food offerings. From the flavors of Thailand to the savory delights of China, Vietnam, France, Colombia, Italy, Korea, India, Mexico, and the United States, attendees enjoyed culinary delights from all regions of the world. To support their fundraising efforts, three high school clubs offered a dessert or snack, while BSA Troop 82 toasted up tasty s’mores and the Junior/Senior Prom Committee served up refreshing lemonade and iced coffee.

Cultural performances captivated audiences throughout the day, featuring displays of dance, music, and martial arts from various traditions. Highlights included the graceful movements of AlPeri, a traditional dance team from Kyrgyzstan, the vibrant rhythms of Indian Bollywood dance, and the energetic movements and beat of the Korean sogo dance and Samulnori.

The Tri-M Strings and Woodwind ensembles, along with talented YISS teachers and staff, added a festive and entertaining backdrop with their diverse musical repertoire.

Vendor booths offered an eclectic mix of pottery, artisanal crafts, handmade jewelry, colorful bags hand-weaved by the Penan Women Project, baby clothing and goods, educational games, and other quality items for attendees to browse and purchase.

The Kids’ Zone was a hive of activity, with children bouncing in inflatable houses, crafting masterpieces, and trying their hand at fencing, basketball, soccer, golf, and other sports and games. The Water Zone provided a refreshing escape from the heat as children gleefully engaged in water gun fights under the warm sun.

The International Bazaar served as a testament to the strength of the YISS community and its commitment to celebrating diversity. The tireless efforts of the YISS Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and event chair, Jessica Cha-Kim, ensured that the day was filled with joy, camaraderie, and cultural exchange. Kudos to our International Bazaar Committee for their weeks of preparation and skillful execution and the many parents, staff, and student volunteers who made the bazaar a special community event for all.
