8th Grade MS CARES Trip Explores Jeju

The YISS 8th grade class set off on their annual CARES (Culture, Awareness, Recreation, Experience, and Service) trip to Jeju from November 5 to 8. The trip was a wonderful bonding experience that gave the students the opportunity to explore Jeju Island while learning about environmental conservation and South Korean culture.

On day one, the students visited the Halla Arboretum, a lush, subtropical walking trail that is home to nearly 1,100 species of plants! After the rejuvenating walk, the team went to Iho Tewoo Beach (이호테우해변) where students learned about how trash pollution ends up along the shoreline. The students then made a group effort to clean up the beach by removing any microplastics that they found. After the long day, the team all enjoyed dinner at a Korean buffet restaurant (백부장) and then went back to the hotel to debrief about tomorrow’s activities.

Day two started off with an exploration of Illchul Land (이출랜드) on the Western side of the island, a site built for environmental preservation. The students were able to observe various species of plants and trees and explore an underground lava tube cave (미천굴). Then at Maze Land, students collaborated to make it through three different mazes. With a little help, they all made it out!

The afternoon was spent at Aqua Planet Aquarium, the largest aquarium in Korea. After a fun show of divers and dolphins, everyone headed to Seongsan Sunrise Peak to watch the beautiful sunset and stunning views during the hike. The team ended the day with an amazing Jeju pork BBQ dinner.

Day three was the perfect day for ocean activities. The 8th graders learned about the Jeju Haenyeo, women divers, and were able to “harvest” marine life alongside one woman who has been diving for 40 years. The students also went out on boats for a deep sea fishing experience. The students caught so many fish, which were then prepared for our meals! Back at the hotel, students walked to a nearby lighthouse and enjoyed the peaceful views of the ocean. The team ended the night reflecting on our ESLRs and enjoying some silly games together. Finally, on the last day, everyone went tangerine picking and made our way back to Seoul. The trip to Jeju was truly a refreshing and educational escape from the city!
