Step into Kindness: Sock Drive for Korean Orphans

Spring is the time of year when we see more sunlight, an increase in energy, a surge in activities, and growth. This spring we challenged our community to ‘Step into Kindness’ with a sock drive for Korean orphans. Partnering with the Oak Tree Project and local orphanages, we learned about the need for new socks. Fostering empathy and meeting the needs of others as an image-bearer of God is one of the Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) we have adopted at YISS. To address this need, we integrated our K-8th grade Random Acts of Kindness campaign with our ESLRs to put learning into action.

Two school clubs—the Middle School’s Service Club and the High School’s HKE (Helping Kids Everyday) club—stepped up and took action. Our Elementary School Chaplain, Mr. Adams, supported our efforts through his weekly Chapels, and Ave Pineda, the PTO Community Service Chair, set up our boxes. Together, these groups generated positive energy and educational awareness around the needs of Korean orphans through our Sock Drive.

Over the span of two weeks, from April 15 to 26, our community responded by donating over 700 new pairs of socks. From playful character socks to practical athletic socks, the collection included socks suitable for children of all ages. Although socks may not be the first need we consider, they are a comfort and aid to daily life. It is an important reminder to be grateful for what we have and reflect on how we can serve others.

This initiative serves as a poignant reminder that no act of kindness is too small. By embracing the call to love one another, we demonstrate the enduring impact of compassion and collective action within our community.
