Little Women Cast Adds Authenticity with Craftwork
The play, Little Women, takes place in the 1800s, many young women like the March sisters learned cross-stitching, knitting, crocheting, and other crafting skills to improve their homes and wardrobes. In order for the YISS production to feel authentic, we created workshop experiences for the young ladies playing Jo, Meg, Amy, Beth, Marmee, Hannah, and Aunt March.
A 9th grade student, Gianna P., shared her expertise in cross-stitching through a Zoom call while classes were virtual in September. Gianna crafts beautiful cross-stitch patterns and illustrates her Schoology blog with her projects, and we are so thankful for her time and dedication to helping our cast prepare for their roles. Later, when we were back on-campus, Gianna came to follow up with the girls in person and see their progress on their flower pattern cross-stitch projects.
We also had the pleasure of learning from Señora Scott, our Spanish teacher, as she taught the girls to knit. Over a video call, Señora Scott taught the actresses how to cast-on then knit and purl their stitches. As they finished their projects, the cast was able to visit Señora Scott’s room to learn how to bind off their finished piece.
Later, Ms. Terry and ES teacher, Mrs. Falgout, held a crochet workshop. Our young ladies were able to learn the basics and then crochet a small pumpkin for the Autumn season. The cast laughed and bonded over the workshop time and were proud to show off their accomplishments. During the show, the Little Women actresses will each carry their own project they’ve worked on throughout our rehearsals on stage. We hope the cross-stitching, knitting, and crocheting will help the production feel more authentic for the audience.
I would like to thank Mrs. Zickefoose and Mrs. Borden for their help in preparing for the workshops. Mrs. Zickefoose connected us with our instructors and helped purchase materials. Mrs. Borden, a cross-stitcher herself, accompanied us to craft stores around Seoul to purchase all the materials needed. Mrs. Borden also cut and prepped all the cloth and hoops for the girls’ cross-stitching.

Seating is limited and will be socially distanced. Reserve your tickets online and then pay and pick up your tickets in the auditorium lobby on the night of the show. All attendees will be required to complete the health form at yis.to/visitors, wear a mask, and have their temperature taken.
