Varsity Girls Basketball Competes For ACSC At Dalat

The Winter Sports Season was experienced in three parts. Part I, pre-Christmas break saw the young varsity girls basketball team build confidence competing in the Red Division, following relegation the previous year. In Division play, the girls lost only one game early on to KIS by 1 point. The Guardians then swept all Red Division opponents, peaking in December against that same KIS with a revenge win by 15 points, a highlight of the season. The team emerged as Red Division Champions. Avery S. (12) and Eva H. (10) received All-Conference honors.

Part II, post-Christmas to Lunar break, featured tougher Blue Division competition including a homecoming friendly vs GSIS and the KAIAC Cup Tournament. In some ways we were starting over, reverting to early season problems with scoring and ball control. Although coming up short against Blue teams, the girls closed the tournament with 2 wins, finishing 5th place, and earned promotion back to Blue Division for the next season. Eva was named to the All-Tournament team.

Part III, post Lunar break, focused on preparation for and competing in the ACSC Tournament February 12 to 15 at Dalat School in Penang, Malaysia. Day 1 was a shock to the system as we were blown out by eventual finalists Faith Academy. Long scoreless stretches and nervous play plagued the team. However, on Day 2 vs Grace, the Guardians put together a complete game featuring balanced scoring and contributions from many players. The win was the Lady Guardians’ first in ACSC pool play in 3 years, and earned them a better placement for bracket play. The final three games came down to one point, one point, and overtime. In heartbreaking fashion, the team found themselves on the losing side of each game. It was an emotional experience for the girls, but they came away closer and more motivated for future opportunities. Two senior captains, Suo-Ying W. and Avery S., ended their Guardian basketball careers with strong performances. Avery was named to the All-ACSC team.
