Students Reflect on Silver Linings in Art Contest
The theme of "Silver Linings" gave way to an incredible array of artwork produced by our students for this year's Calendar Art Contest. Students were challenged by the YISS PTO Art Committee to creatively express something positive they have seen or experienced arising from a difficult circumstance. The theme was quite fitting in light of COVID and the impact that it has had on not only our students but on people around the world.
In February, the PTO collected more than 120 submissions from students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Our young student artists channeled their creativity by employing various materials ranging from colored pencils, markers, acrylic, oil, and digital media. Some also weaved in 3D elements that made for an impressive final product. The Art Committee was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the skills of our students and their artistic points of view.
Though difficult, school administrators and art teachers selected 34 semi-finalists and 26 finalists by voting on the artwork without student names. The pieces chosen as semi-finalists and finalists were on display in April in the main lobby for all to view and enjoy.
Thank you to all who participated in this year’s art competition. Special thanks to the parents who helped frame and set up the lobby display and others involved in supporting our Calendar Art Contest. Our 2021-22 YISS calendar will certainly be a beautiful "work of art!”
