HS Tennis Finishes Season Strong as Far East Champions
The varsity boys tennis team had a solid season, with many players finishing near the top of the KAIAC Conference standings. With four new members and three returning juniors, the team was in somewhat of a rebuilding year. However, captain and number 1 singles player Ian C. (11) had a strong season and finished second in conference play and 3rd in the KAIAC tournament. Number 2 singles David L. (11) and number 3 singles Daniel K. (11) both had strong regular seasons, finishing third in the conference and third at KAIAC.
The varsity girls team had a tough tennis season, however all players showed growth and a positive spirit. Our singles players, Ashley K. (11), Irene G. (12), and Erica C. (11), all fought hard during their matches and improved in their mental game as well as their physical play. Our doubles players, Claire P. (11), Hyunjung C. (10), Sora B. (9), and Alexis K. (10), had strong regular seasons. Claire and Hyunjung finished in second place in KAIAC.
The Far East team of Ian C. (11), David L. (11), Daniel K. (11), Joshua P. (9), Ashley K. (11), Erica C. (11), Hyunjung C. (10), and Irene G. (12) played well in the tournament held at Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan, from November 7-9. In boys singles, Ian finished 3rd, while David finished 6th. In boys doubles, Ian and David won the championships with a victory over St. Mary's International School of Tokyo. Daniel and Joshua also played well, finishing 4th in doubles. In mixed doubles play, Daniel and partner Hyunjung made a great pair and finished in 3rd place. Freshman Joshua and partner Erica also had a very good tournament in mixed doubles play, finishing in a very respectable 5th place. The boys team narrowly missed winning the team title and finished in second. With strong outcomes across all our teams, however, YISS was able to win the overall division one team title for the second year in a row. Congratulations to all of our tennis players!
