Aquatics Facilities Reopens After Extensive Renovations

After undergoing an extensive three-month renovation, the aquatics facility reopened on September 16, 2019, to the delight of our students, parents, teachers, and staff. YISS is fortunate to have one of the finest school aquatics facilities in Korea. Opened in 2006, the YISS natatorium appeared to be in good condition, however due to the inevitable wear and tear over the years, pipes, air ducts, vents, filtration system, etc. were in desperate need of repair or replacement. Although some of the improvements are not visible, the effects are significant and have resulted in an overall improved environment for swimming.

Other more noticeable improvements:

  • new tiling for the floor, walls, ceiling, and pool

  • new seating in the balcony

  • an updated record board

  • an improved 14-speaker sound system

  • 20m long floor to ceiling sound dampening mural

As you enter the pool, the first thing that people will notice is the giant floor-to-ceiling mural of YISS swimmers demonstrating the four swim strokes: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. The mural also has a functional purpose as an acoustic sound-dampening wall. When you look closely, you will notice that holes of varying sizes are used to create the image. As a result, there is significantly less reverberation in the pool area, which will enable swimmers to hear the voices of instructors and coaches more clearly.

Another significant improvement is the addition of 11 lanes dividing the pool width-wise. This new configuration gives flexibility and creativity in providing instruction that allows us to individualize and differentiate for a wider range of abilities in our various programs. The aquatics department invites you to come enjoy the renovations for yourself as you participate in our morning swim program, our after school program, the middle school swim team, the high school swim team, or any of our swim invitationals.
